I know what you’re thinking right now, but no, the Blue Oval’s latest recall is different in nature compared to the GM ignition switch saga. Furthermore, Ford is not aware of any vehicle accidents or injured people related to this defect.
As it happens, the American automaker is calling back over 65,000 examples of the 2014 and 2015 Fusion. Affected vehicles were made at the Flat Rock Assembly plant and the Hermosillo Assembly plant between July 27th, 2013 and October 31st, 2014. So what’s the deal with the ignition keys of these cars?
Well, the manufacturer tells that those 65k of Fusion vehicles, including Hybrid and Energi variations, suffer from a programming glitch with the instrument cluster.
Out of the 65,500 affected population, Ford is aware of 56,479 Fusion vehicles in the US and federalized territories, with 6,048 other in Canada and 2,342 in Mexico. The fix comes in the form of a simple software reflash of the instrument cluster, which can be done at your nearest Ford dealership.

This apparently minor mess-up allows the ignition key to be removed half an hour after the ignition is turned off, even if the Fusion’s automatic transmission is not in the “Park” position.
This is a compliance issue with Federal Motor Vehicle Standard 114, a regulation that involves theft protection and roll-away prevention. If your vehicle doesn’t let you turn the ignition key and set the gearbox in “Park” or engage the handbrake quickly in a roll-away situation, you can only imagine that would end pretty badly for the driver, passengers and traffic participants as well.Out of the 65,500 affected population, Ford is aware of 56,479 Fusion vehicles in the US and federalized territories, with 6,048 other in Canada and 2,342 in Mexico.
