The Dearborn-based automaker just issued a new voluntary recall campaign. Blue Oval engineers found out through a thorough internal investigation that over 200,000 cars are prone to rust prematurely.
Covering an estimated 204,448 examples of the Ford Edge and Lincoln MKX from the 2007 and 2008 model years, this recall is about corrosion that appears on the reinforcement brackets where the fuel tank is mounted to the car. That's not the best place for rust to develop for a highly obvious reason.
If rust builds up on the brackets that support the fuel tank, the corrosion will eventually eat through the fuel tank itself. When this happens, expect to sense a poignant fuel odor, which announces fuel leaks and a potential fire.
Ford says the check engine light may also light up when this happens. The company is aware of an incident in which one such vehicle caught fire, but Lady Lucked made it so that no one was injured.
In the recall notice, Ford informs that Edge and Lincoln MKX vehicles built from June 15th, 2006 through September 22nd, 2008 are due an urgent visit to the nearest U.S. dealership service departments.
Last but not least, Ford says the biggest population of affected crossovers are registered or were originally sold in northern states such as New York, Connecticut, Columbia, West Virginia and Wisconsin, as well as Canadian provinces such as Nova Scotia, Newfoundland and Labrador, Ontario and Quebec.
