We all hate speed tickets but we should also be aware that speeding is not a safe practice when traveling from A to B. Speed limits on different roads are there for a reason but Ford wants to prevent drivers from exceeding these boundaries with the Intelligent Speed Limiter.
There are many ways that allow you to get out of a speeding ticket but wouldn’t it be better if that speeding ticket never happened? There’s even an old saying teaching us that prevention is better than cure so why not try that instead, especially when Ford is giving a helping hand.

Their solution is called Intelligent Speed Limiter, a system that enables automatic adjustment of maximum vehicle speed in order to stay within legal limits, and will make a debut on the upcoming S-Max.

“Drivers are not always conscious of speeding and sometimes only become aware they were going too fast when they receive a fine in the mail or are pulled over by law enforcement,” said Stefan Kappes, active safety supervisor, Ford of Europe.

Users can activate this safety feature through steering wheels controls, by setting a maximum vehicle speed. Using a windscreen-mounted camera, the Intelligent Speed Limiter constantly monitors road signs and when the speed limit is lower than the maximum speed previously set by the driver, it slows the vehicle down as required. Moreover, the system does not apply the brakes, but restricts fuel supply to the engine for a smooth deceleration.

When the speed-limited section of the road ends, the driver is allowed to accelerate up to the set speed, but only in those cases where this does not exceed the new speed limit. The Intelligent Speed Limiter system is effective at speeds between 20 and 120 mph (30 and 190 km/h) and drivers can override it by firmly depressing the accelerator pedal.
