Garbage Truck Running on CNG Explodes in Indianapolis

I’m sure this will raise a lot of voices saying it could happen with hydrogen fuel cell cars too but here it goes - a garbage truck powered by compressed natural gas (CNG) burnt in Indianapolis this week damaging five properties.

Picking up trash could be more dangerous than we thought so far, as this driver’s dump truck caught fire after picking up trash from a hardware store. The back of his vehicle started flaming and, if it wasn’t for some nearby power lines, he would have dumped the burning stuff and avoid the disaster.

Instead, he managed to call for the fire department, who arrived in time to assist the big blast. As you can imagine, flames started spreading and soon enough they reached the compressed gas tanks which began to rupture and eventually blew up in the sky, hitting properties a quarter-mile away.

One fireman got hit by flying debris but, fortunately, he only suffered minor injuries. You can also check the video bellow to find out more from local news reports on WRTV 6.

As for the hydrogen technology, Toyota claims it’s 700 MPa tanks are almost bulletproof. The only thing that managed to put a hole in them was a .50 cal bullet. Even so, they said the hydrogen just wooshed it’s way out without much drama. Real life explosions don't quite match those in a Michael Bay action flick, you know?
