Chevrolet will give a hybrid aroma to its new 2016 Malibu mid-size sedan built on GM’s E2XX platform and scheduled to make a debut next week, during the 2015 New York International Auto Show.
General Motors will bring the 2016 Chevy Malibu at the NYIAS while showrooms will see cars coming in the fourth quarter. But until then, the Malibu hybrid is going to take a bow and reinforce Chevrolet’s car-electrification efforts.

It’s also bragging time for the golden bow tie manufacturer, as General Motors officials insisted that the Malibu hybrid will get more than 45 mpg in combined highway and city conditions, which happen to be above what the competition is offering.

For the record, hybrid variants of the 2015 Ford Fusion returns 42 mpg in combined driving while the 2015 Toyota Camry and 2016 Hyundai Sonata are both good for 41 mpg.

Which makes us wonder, what powertrain will the Malibu hybrid come up with? Well, the green mid-size sedan is going to rely on a 1.8-liter four-cylinder engine that’s paired to two electric motors - similar to what the upcoming Chevrolet Volt PHEV will offer.

The overall output is rated at 182 HP and Chevrolet took some efficiency measures as they will introduce the Exhaust Gas Heat Recovery feature - a function that uses heat coming from the exhaust for warming up the engine and the cabin, so fuel economy gets an improvement in cold weather. The entire system will be juiced-up by a 80-cell 1.5 kWh battery unit that can solely power the car to 55 mph (89 km/h).

The future looks green for Chevrolet as the Volt is now the best-selling PHEV in the United States and the carmaker will introduce its second, hopefully better, generation later this year. Not to mention that in 2017, we’ll get to meet the Bolt EV and its estimated 200 miles electric range.
