Hyundai Tucson Gets 700 HP for SEMA, Can't Say We're Not Intrigued

The Hyundai Tucson is your ordinary SUV, ready to perform as a family car by taking your kids to soccer practice and even out on a holiday road trip.
But nobody expects it to do it particularly fast. It's got a 2.0 GDI engine delivering 164 hp which isn't a lot no matter how you look at it. Instead, the accent is put more on fuel efficiency, a field where the 2016 Tucson has a 31 mpg (7,6 l/100km) highway rating to brag about. There are also turbocharged alternatives, but these come with a smaller displacement of 1.6-liters so the performance boost is minimal - 175 hp.

Yet somehow, the Hyundai Tucson that is expected to feature at this year's SEMA show will have no less than 700 hp. It's true, it won't be using any of the engines available on the Tucson at this time, but it's not a V8 either.

No, the show Tucson will have Hyundai's own 2.4-liter four-cylinder Theta-II engine, but with heavy modifications. It is developed together with Bisimoto Engineering who has installed a Turbonetics BTX-6465 billet turbocharger, an upgraded engine management and strengthened internal engine parts including a new camshaft.

But let's not focus on that and think about the 700 hp figure instead. There's no info on the amount of torque released by the modified engine, but it's safe to assume it's pretty massive. To handle it, Hyundai will be employing a six-speed manual transmission.

This isn't just a performance boost, though, with Bisimoto modifying the interior as well, together with suspension and brakes. The car is riding on custom air suspension while the cabin received a Bisimoto 4-Point Roll Cage so there's no doubt regarding this Tucson's performances.

On the outside, there are the white five-star race-spec 19-inch wheels that send the right message, together with the elimination of the front grille, replaced with a huge intercooler to cool the incoming air.

While this will most definitely not be the weirdest car present at the SEMA show (starting on November the 3rd), it's still something to keep an eye out for. We'll get to see real pictures of it then, too.
