Harley LiveWire Now Means Half the Performance at Double the Price, but This Might Change

So far it’s truly impossible to determine the exact plans Harley-Davidson has for their LiveWire electric motorcycle prototype. Will it become a real presence in the H-D dealerships any time soon, or is this only a test platform whose sole purpose is to test the reactions of the potential buyers?

While we are still caught in a guessing game, I’d say the LiveWire is both a test machine and a platform upon which Harley WILL build an electric bike. One thing seems to be very clear: the fact that the MoCo will not offer this version of the LiveWire for sale, because it’s underperforming and would come in as a quite expensive piece of machinery.

The LiveWire could cost $50,000 as is

Some media outlets have recently mentioned the $50,000 figure as an estimated price for the LiveWire as it is now. However, the bar and shield have found out about this sum and have also been quick to demand some clarifications. It turns out that this price was not actually mentioned by any official H-D source, as an update in the Journal Sentinel reports.

Still, this obviously leaves us with the question of how much would Harley ask for a commercial, street-ready version of the LiveWire? Rumors in the industry have it that Milwaukee would eye a $25,000 price tag for the electric bikes sold in the US, possibly in the standard trim, and with some extra battery storage available for a premium.

However, Harley must first endow the LiveWire with a noticeably better range, as the current 53 miles (85 km) performance is far from what the customers expect and far from what the rest of the electric pack offers. As cool and interesting an electric Harley could be, it’s obvious that people would not spend such money on a bike with such a limited rage and it doesn’t take a bike industry specialist to figure this.

Harley and their LiveWire are on a test-ride tour which includes the US, Canada and Europe, and are gathering as much feedback as possible. Common sense tells us that a corporation such as the MoCo is not making such efforts and doesn’t spend money just to be seen doing that. They ARE cooking something electric, even though they’re as talkative as a roasted fish for now. Wait and see…
