When you say Hollywood celebrity you say expensive hobbies. When you say Harrison Ford, you think of airplanes. His huge experience flying personal aircraft is most likely the reason the 72-year old Indiana Jones star managed to successfully land his Ryan PT-22 Recruit the other day. However, since it was an emergency maneuver he was taken to the hospital, where he was reported to be in fair to moderate condition.
Ford was piloting his vintage 2-seater fighter plane Thursday afternoon when something went wrong and he was forced to emergency land into Penman golf course in Venice, California. Not only did he manage to lower the intensity of the crash, but he even veered off course from the runaway in order to avoid crashing into the neighboring houses.
Initial reports were that Ford suffered multiple gashes to his head and was bleeding, yet luckily two doctors who happened to be at the golf course rushed over to treat the actor. According to The Guardian, paramedics found him to be “alert and conscious” and suffering “moderate” trauma. Paramedics “initiated spinal immobilization, started an IV and began all the necessary medical protocols that we do. We are very thankful that the passenger had [only] very moderate injuries,” Patrick Butler, Los Angeles assistant fire chief, told a press conference at the scene.
The fact that the iconic actor is OK was later confirmed by his son Ben who tweeted his father is “an incredibly strong man”. Further investigations will take part, but according to The United Talent Agency, which represents Ford, it appears his plane stalled upon take off. This means the actor’s only choice was to make an emergency landing.
The famous actor was involved in previous crashes before, but managed to get away safely with minor to moderate injuries usually. He is a private pilot of both fixed-wing and helicopters and owns an 800-acre (3.2 square km) ranch in Jackson, Wyoming, approximately half of which he has donated as a nature reserve.
