As the second smallest continent in the world, Europe is home to nigh on 50 countries and millions of souls. For automakers, the Old Continent is quite an important market. 12.6 million new cars were sold there in 2015 according to the European Automobile Manufacturers Association. For ultra-luxury and sports car makers, Europe has been and will forever be the stomping ground of the affluent and opulent.
Of course, China and the United States also have a knack for high-priced cars, but Europeans are at the forefront of the game. If they were not, then the following list would’ve featured at least one car that isn’t made in Europe. Now let’s get down to business. Which are the most expensive cars available in the European Union in calendar year 2016? I’ll gladly talk you through ten of the most expensive.

Regarding nationality, one of the models that is featured on the list is French, one is Swedish, one’s Dutch, one's German, two are Italian, and four are British. As you might have guessed by now, the car that leads the ranking is the almighty Bugatti Chiron, the long-awaited successor of the awe-inspiring Bugatti Veyron.

For the suggested retail price of a Chiron, one could buy at least seven examples of the Bentley Mulsanne Speed, the car that ranked bottom on the list. A hypercar that you won't find here is the Pagani Huayra BC because all of them have been spoken for and the regular Huayra is out of production. These being said, let’s find out more about the Bugatti Chiron, Bentley Mulsanne Speed, and eight other dream cars.

Bugatti Chiron - €2.4 million

The mother and father of four-wheeled performance. The argument to end all arguments. The Magnum Opus of passenger cars. Call it whatever you want. The Bugatti Chiron is not so much a hypercar, but a collection of numbers.

What Bugatti describes as “the most powerful, fastest, most luxurious and most exclusive production super sports car in the world,” pushes the envelope for everyone and anyone with 1,480 HP (1,500 PS), 1,180 lb-ft (1,600 Nm) of torque, and a mind-boggling maximum speed of 261 miles per hour (420 km/h).

The human race has been forever driven to cross boundaries and leaps into the unknown. That’s why mankind set foot on the moon and that’s why the pearl of the Volkswagen Group released the Chiron into the world. If you place your order for one of the 500 units that will ever be built, chances are your Chiron will be delivered early next year. It will be worth the wait, though. And then some.

Koenigsegg Regera - €1.89 million

First revealed as a concept in Geneva in 2015, then shown in production-ready form at the 2016 Geneva Motor Show, the Regera is a car that beggars belief. Koenigsegg is so proud of it, the Regera has been labeled a megacar.

The torquiest car in the world prides itself with 1,475 lb-ft (2,000 Nm) of get-up-and-go, all of it motivating the rear wheels. Thank God the Regera is equipped with traction control. Otherwise things would easily get out of control. Compared to the Bugatti Chiron, the Koenigsegg Regera employs more than just internal combustion to produce that torque. It employs hybrid technology.

More specifically, a V8 and a trio of electric motors. One of those electric motors is mounted on the crankshaft and it acts as a one-speed fixed gear transmission with a ratio of 2.73:1. The eco-conscious who want to save Johnny Polar Bear can rejoice because they can drive the Regera in pure EV mode.

Mercedes-Maybach S 600 Pullman - €595,000

The first Mercedes-Benz 600 (W100) was the vehicle of choice for people such as John Lennon, Hugh Hefner, Saddam Hussein, and Mao Zedong. The contemporary 600, on the other hand, trumps its legendary predecessor in every way imaginable except for the Paul Bracq-penned design of the W100.

Like its predecessor from the 1960s, the Mercedes-Maybach S 600 is available in Pullman configuration too. Measuring 21.3 feet (6,499 mm) front bumper to rear end, the Pullman is 3.5 feet (1,053 mm) longer and way posher than the already dignified Mercedes-Maybach S 600. It’s opulence at its finest.

Thanks to a wheelbase of 14.5 feet (4,418 mm), even Gheorghe Muresan, the 7-foot 7-inch (2.31 m) tall basketball player, can sit comfortably in this thing. And don’t get me started about the toys it comes with.

Rolls-Royce Phantom Extended Wheelbase - €486,710

Add an entry-level Mercedes-Benz S-Class to the price of a regular Rolls-Royce Phantom and what you get is this - the Phantom Extended Wheelbase. This is the best Rolls-Royce has to offer under the ownership of the BMW Group.

It may be 1.33 feet (407 mm) shorter than the Mercedes-Maybach S600 Pullman and it is more old-fashioned than the German land yacht, but still, this Rolls-Royce is a glorious excuse to burn €486,710 of your hard earned cash.

Thanks to lounge-like proportions, an indulgent private space that is perfect for relaxing between business meetings, and supreme onboard comfort, the Rolls-Royce Phantom Extended Wheelbase is all things to all well-to-do men.

Rolls-Royce Phantom Drophead Coupe - €459,697

The Rolls-Royce Phantom Drophead Coupe is the most expensive four-seater convertible in production today, make no mistake about that. It is the ultimate choice in open-top motoring unless you prefer drop-top supercars.

Compared to the traditional Rolls-Royce saloon body shell, this model emphasizes airy openness. For those who would rather not embrace the elements, the acoustic insulation of this thing’s soft top is the best in the biz.

When all is said and done, the Drophead Coupe represents an informal direction from the British manufacturer, a model that has been developed specifically to attract new buyers to the brand, especially younger consumers. The hardtop Coupe is a little bit cheaper, starting at €442,204 in Germany.

Lamborghini Aventador LP 750-4 SV Roadster - €389,356

Forget the Centenario, Veneno, and Sesto Elemento. Ever since the Miura earned its SV badge, the Superveloce nameplate designates the most exciting Lamborghini models. Obviously, the hooky Aventador is also available as an SV.

The roadster version, however, is the one to go for because it is madder than a penguin sipping bubbly on Miami Beach. As a styling exercise, the Aventador LP 750-4 SV Roadster ticks all the right boxes. Performance-wise, it’s enough of a handful for most people who can afford to spend big on such a special machine.

Only 500 units will be built and production has already begun. If you want one as a daily driver or as an investment, you’d better be quick about putting a deposit on one. These V12-powered babies will undoubtedly sell like hot cakes. If you'd prefer a regular Lamborghini Aventador, that’ll be €303,450.

Ferrari F12tdf - €379,000

It’s not every day that Ferrari comes with a model that pays homage to the 250 GT Berlinetta Tour de France of the 1950s. Compared to the F12berlinetta (€268,400), the much more costly F12tdf is more extreme and more desirable.

The finest engineers in Maranello massaged the 6.3-liter V12 to produce 769 horsepower (780 PS) and enough torque to wiggle the tail out whenever your feel like it. The improvements in the stylistic department aren’t too shabby either, but the power and the way it looks aren’t the defining characteristics of the F12tdf.

What defines this thing is how exciting it is to drive around a track. The aero bits and pieces help with that considering the F12tdf produces 230 kilograms of downforce at 124 mph (200 km/h), not far from double that of the F12berlinetta.

Rolls-Royce Dawn - €330,000

Based on the Rolls-Royce Ghost Series II (€272,837) and closely related to the Wraith (€279,531), the Dawn is the newest model brought to market by the marque represented by the Spirit of Ecstasy. It looks rather tempting, doesn’t it?

To stand apart from its stablemates, engineers haven’t just hacked the roof off the Wraith. According to Rolls-Royce, the Dawn features 80 percent unique body panels. Under the skin, however, you get a familiar 6.6-liter V12 engine.

Despite the fact that it produces more horsepower than what the Phantom Drophead Coupe has to offer, don’t expect thrilling straight line get-up-and-go from this thing. The Dawn is the type of convertible that prefers to be laid-back, not to hurry from point A to point B. In other words, it’s an excellent pose-mobile.

Spyker C8 Preliator - €324,900

Most car nuts got acquainted with Spyker when Top Gear tested the C8 Spyder. That was 2004. Since then, Spyker was declared bankrupt. But just like a Phoenix bird, Spyker has risen out of its ashes and it is now back in business.

The first model to enter production after Spyker Cars resumed operations is this - the C8 Preliator. Only 50 units will be made, but I have this gut feeling the Dutch company will have a hard time selling the lot because nothing is amazing about the C8 Preliator, not even on paper, other than the exposed gear shifter.

Even the engine leaves room for improvement. Believe it or not, an Audi-sourced 4.2-liter V8 lies underneath the hood. It produces just 525 horsepower. From my POV, that is too little power for a too expensive boutique supercar.

Bentley Mulsanne Speed - €323,918

Bentley Mulsanne Speed

Volkswagen Group-owned Bentley took a stab at BMW-owned Rolls-Royce with the 2017 model year Mulsanne by describing it as “the ultimate expression of British automotive luxury.” Pomp and circumstance much, dear peeps at Bentley?

It would’ve been better if the Crewe-based manufacturer had dubbed the Mulsanne as the best Bentley has to offer. The Mulsanne Speed, on the other hand, is the best of the best Bentley has to offer, albeit the color of the pictured Mulsanne Speed is utterly vulgar.

The Speed in its name should be a tell-tale sign what this Mulsanne is all about. Yes, it’s the savagery of the engine. I won’t bore you with the numbers, though. Instead, I’ll highlight that the Mulsanne Speed can be specified with the most powerful automotive OEM audio system in the world - a Naim for Bentley Premium Audio with 20 speakers, 20 channels, and a 2,200-watt amplifier. Boombox on wheels, anyone?
