Australia is known as the land of the burnout and the powerslide, a power-hungry place where most average people drive V8. That's not exactly true any more, not with high taxation and expensive gas. So petrolheads there have been forced to find other, smaller cars for having fun in.
When Subaru launched the all-new WRX STI sedan at the beginning of the year, they said the Australian market was the the third largest for their hooligan AWD tool. Now Honda wants to offer the Aussies a fast hatchback, the all-new Civic Type R.

There hasn't been a Civic Type R in many years, and even that wasn't as good as the classic model from the 2000s. Yet the 2015 model is widely expected to be one of the best cars Honda has ever built. It will have their first 2-liter turbo engine, independent suspension, a ridiculously cool body kit and track settings.

Honda Australia director Stephen Collins recently confirmed to CarAdvice that the Civic Type R will be available there. Without going into too many technical details, the official made it clear the same dealer lots that house little Jazz superminis will also have this 280+ horsepower front-wheel drive freak of nature.

“We are trying to confirm timing and therefore have not officially announced as yet,” Collins told us today. “It’s a matter of when not if — it will return to Australia for sure. [We] Should be able to confirm timing in the next few months."

The Civic Type R will be built in the British factory of Swindon and will be available in RHD for that market. So Australians should get theirs right around the start of next summer.

It's worth considering a few of the rivals this car will face next year before starting to save money. The same publication writes that in Australia, 25% of Golds sold are either the GTI or the R. Australia is also the second largest market for Renaultsport cars after France. We all know how good both the Golf R and the new Megane RS 275 Trophy are, so Honda will have a tough fight on its hands.
