The Takata horror soap opera just received a new episode after Honda Motor Co said they will recall an additional 100,000 vehicles in the United States over the same faulty airbags built by Takata Corp.
After last December’s recall wave operated by Honda, the Japanese carmaker took the decision of calling in another 104,871 vehicles in the US, according to the company's website. The most affected models are the 2008 Pilot SUVs - 88,549 units will be recalled for the first time - followed by 10,868 2004 Honda Civic models and 5,454 Accord sedans 2001 MY.
According to Honda, these additional faulty vehicles were found after a deeper inquiry on which models were initially equipped with malfunctioning Takata airbag inflators. Call it irony, but Honda just launched an advertising campaign on Monday that informs the owners on the danger posed by faulty Takata airbags while urging them to replace these potentially lethal components before something bad happens.
As you might know, since 2008 when it first erupted, this massive airbag scandal had around 25 million cars recalled by several big-name manufacturers from around the world, including Chrysler, BMW, Toyota and Lexus. So far, the faulty component was responsible for six deaths and dozens of injuries. The defective airbags provided by Takata can deploy with excessive force that causes metal shards to fly towards occupants.
This situation is one of the biggest and most dangerous flops in the automotive industry, but the worst part isn’t over yet as safety commissions and carmakers alike are still investigating the problem, so who knows how many cars will have to undergo another recall campaign due to those sub-standard inflators.
