Dumpsters are definitely not the first thing which comes to mind when art comes into discussion, but these days you might just have to revisit your opinions. Brian Klock owner of Mitchell, South Dakota-based Klock Werks Kustom Cycles is the one who came up with a fairly crazy idea which turned out to make a lot of sense: custom-painting dumpsters in the city to make them look less gross and even draw attention in a pleasant way.
Nearby Sioux Falls local authorities have been trying to find the optimal way to visually block the presence of dumpsters from public view. Fences, opaque panels and other solutions have been considered, with the ultimate goal of hiding the dumpsters from view. Still, Brian Klock and Jeff Miedema with Miedema Sanitation have other ideas… and even started putting them in practice.
Brain discussed the matter with his wife Laura and thought to create a graphic design inspired by local themes and add the Klock Werks emblem and turn it into a wrap. A dumpster was quickly adorned this way and set on display. The result? “What he saw was people posing for photographs by the dumpster in his parking lot, Klock said. He even witnessed guests picking up debris more often and placing it inside the receptacle,” Klock tells argusleader.
Anyway, this move is one of the best proofs that unbridled creativity is one of the most spectacular resources of modern days and can play a much more important role in our lives. Such a way of linking the custom motorcycle culture with street art, urban zone management, waste management and the freedom of expression certainly does look like human race evolution.
