It’s known as the car only famous people around the globe would drive, from the Pope himself to celebrities such as Coco Chanel, John Lennon, Aristotle Onassis and Elvis Presley. The Mercedes-Benz 600 in question was owned by the most nominated male actor in the academy’s history, Jack Nicholson. What few people know nowadays, however, is that the 77-year old actor was also the advocate of standard rides powered by hydrogen fuel.
Ever wondered what one of the most iconic actors in Hollywood drove? If you did, here we are answering that exact question. Jack Nicholson is part of the extremely exclusive driver’s club who once owned a Mercedes-Benz 600.

Introduced in 1963, the advanced limousine was equipped with adjustable air suspension, a 6.3-liter V8 engine with mechanical fuel injection and a hydraulic system that powered the seats, windows and automatic closing doors.

A Mercedes driven by The Devil

Only 2,677 units were built by the time production ceased in 1981. Nicholson drove the Mercedes 600 in question in the legendary movie The Witches of Eastwick (1987), in which he played The Devil. The car is now located at the Los Angeles-based Petersen Museum, so you could always take a trip there and check it out.

Mercedes’ rare limousine is famous for being extremely advanced for its age of production and for the people who owned one. Raging from rock stars, billionaires, presidents and what nots, the car is truly a collectable.

Nicholson, an avocate of hydrogen-fueled cars

Even though Nicholson is probably one of the richest actors on the market and could afford mostly any ride out there, few people remember he used to also be the advocate of non-petrol cars. In fact, he even invested in one of the California-based hydrogen fuel research companies ever since the 1970s.

For some reason, we stumbled upon a CBC report from 1978, having the Hollywood legend driving an average Chevy that ran on hydrogen fuel. In the footage below, we can see Nicholson talking about how this new, experimental powering mode could help reducing pollution, and shifting away from the oil economy. After all, it was only a couple of years since the famous oil crisis happened (1971) so it’s no wonder celebrities were looking forward to new, green companies trying to get rid of the oil embargo.

Jack knew

It turns out Nicholson had quite the feeling about all the green cars. After all, look at California now, or even better, look at what Elon Musk’s managed to do with his famous EV cars...
