Movistar Yamaha rider and two-time MotoGP World Champion Jorge Lorenzo is also having four-wheeled fun during the winter. He will take part in the Gulf 12 Hours endurance race in Abu Dhabi this very weekend as a driver for team Kessel Racing and will be behind the wheel of a Ferrari 453 GT3 Challenge Evo.
Monster Energy Drink-sponsored Swiss Kessel Racing will line up a 4-driver setup in Abu Dhabi, with Lorenzo’s first confirmed team mate being Australian Liam Talbot, a former Aston Martin driver last season. The other two drivers are Jacques Duvyers (UK) and Marco Zanuttini (Italy).
Even more, he also took part in the Monza Rally Show in 2012, but again, that event was nothing like the Prancing Horse experience. At Montmelo he drove a Seat Leon, while at Monza he was at the helm of a Citroen DS3, so you can figure out that these cars simply have nothing in common with the Ferrari 458 GT3 Challenge Evo.
Lorenzo’s presence in this race is also linked with his personal sponsor in MotoGP, Monster Energy Drink, and a valuable method of staying in the racing business during the premier class off-season.
“I love doing this kind of thing during the winter and to be able do these events with sponsors who have supported me throughout the year, like Monster. It’s a way to relax whilst also having a taste of competition. To be able to drive a Ferrari at such a special circuit is something quite unique. Also, doing so in an endurance event really motivates me,” Jorge Lorenzo tells motogp.com. So far, after the second free practice, Lorenzo and his team are in the 13th position.
When it comes to car racing, Lorenzo’s Yamaha team mate Valentino Rossi is a much more successful driver. He has taken part in a lot of Monza Rally Show editions, has won three times and was a runner-up for another 6 times. Rossi is also believed to consider a career as a WRC driver after he’s through with MotoGP.
Lorenzo likes Ferrari, but will Ferrari like him?
The fact that Jorge Lorenzo likes Ferrari is not exactly a new thing, as we have seen him paying a visit to the Maranello factory earlier in the summer, prior to the Sachsenring round.
