The affected motorcycles belong to the 690 Enduro R and the 690 SMC R family. The 2015 machines need to have the rear brake assembly looked at by a technician while the 2014 and 2015 model year SMC R also have to have their brake rotors inspected.

Possible loss of brake power for the rear system

During a routine test in the ongoing production, KTM discovered that the rear ABS brake line might become damaged by a spring clamp. More specifically, the spring band clamps of the engine ventilation tube might have damaged the brake line, possibly leading to a loss of brake pressure in the rear assembly.

Even more, the Austrian manufacturer also discovered that even if the pre-existing defect was not present, the same part could suffer from vibrations at the contact point.

Shorter spacers for the front wheel may lead to rotor damage and more

2014-2015 model year 690 SMC R bikes might have been assembled with a shorter spacer for the front wheel. If this is the case, this might lead to rotor, fork and ABS sensor damage in the front wheel, causing the front ABS to malfunction.

The brake piston of the front wheel might also be pushed from the disc, resulting in complete failure of the brake system and dramatically increasing the risk of a crash and injury.

Customers will be notified in writing by KTM and free repairs will be scheduled at authorized dealers. The house of Mattighofen adds that the inspection can only be performed by a qualified KTM dealer. After detecting these issues, all the bikes being produced have been upgraded and will not experience such problems.
