While last year was a case of "another day, another recall," 2015 saw automakers improve to "another week, another 100k-plus recall." Nevermind our sarcasm, things are way better than last year, but manufacturing gremlins are still a major problem for top shelf carmakers.
The South Korean compact car with weird looks penned at the manufacturer's California design center is the subject of the latest North American safety recall. With 208,858 potentially affected units, this is what we'd call quite a biggie. So what happened?
Nothing much, apparently, but Federal Motor Vehicle Safety Standards and Regulations apply even for the smallest manufacturing defects. Kia Motors America announced that the previously mentioned population of model year 2014 and 2015 Soul and Soul electric vehicles have very fragile accelerator pedals.
2014 and 2015 Kia Soul and Kia Soul EVs made between July 21st, 2013 and January 8th, 2015 may see "a section of the accelerator pedal" bending and ultimately fracturing. Well, that certainly doesn't sound good, more so after we're offered with the following consequence: "The driver may have difficulty accelerating the vehicle, increasing the risk of a crash." Captain Obvious has spoken, LOL!
Like any other call back op before it, Kia Motors America promised to notify owners as soon as possible. Dealership service departments were instructed to add a supporting rubber underneath the pedal stopper, completely free of charge. This vehicle safety campaign is expected to begin March 24th. 'Til then, affected owners should contact the Kia customer service at 1-800-333-4542 or the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration at 1-888-327-4236.
