Ferrari’s Fiorano racetrack probably has more Prancing Horse tire marks than asphalt, but the circuit is currently serving for the development of the fastest street car-based Ferrari that has ever lapped it, the LaFerrari XX.
Ferrari’s customer racing program is almost ready to introduce the motorsport incarnation of the LaFerrari and a prototype was spied fighting the stopwatch on Fiorano earlier this week. The tentatively named LaFerrari XX is in the final development stages, but the racecar is still covered in heavy camouflage and for good reason - the Ferrari displays a serious aerodynamic package.

Compared to the road-legal LaFerrari, there body of the XX sports plenty of changes that will cater to the downforce needs of the track action. The prototype appears to be wider, with the front end sporting extra air intakes, as well as a lip spoiler.

Moving to the rear of the LaFerrari XX, we find two fixed spoilers at the edges - this has already become a signature move for Maranello’s XX aero packages. While the production LaFerrari uses a quadruple exhaust layout, the spied prototype only has two exhaust tips.

The technical package

The XX at the end of the car’s designation means the standard petrol-electric powertrain will be pushed from 950 to 1,050 hp. While the HY-KERS electrical side of the deal is expected to remain unchanged in terms of the output (its setup will be different though), the extra oomph will arrive thanks to further tweaking of the naturally-aspirated 6.3-liter V12.

Of course, the rest of the tech package will also be sharpened up - while the power increase is not that important, the engineers will focus on the other dynamic aspects of the car.

The real world details

The adjacent pics may just be the last spyshots of the LaFerrari XX, as the vehicle is very close to its unveiling. In fact, the racercar is expected to escape the cold season and make its debut at the Finali Mondiali, an event which will take place at Abu Dhabi’s Yas Marina track on December 3-6. The Italian designation of the event isn’t there by chance - we are talking about the Ferrari’s racing season celebration.

Since the LaFerrari XX is part of Ferrari’s Corse Clienti program, it should follow the usual path. This means the automaker keeps the cars, while customers are flown to various racing events.

Mind you, this is not just a story about rich folks battling out on the track under Ferrari’s supervision. As some of you know, all future Ferrari V12 engines will come with electrical assistance, so Maranello’s engineers are set to learn valuable lessons with the LaFerrari XX.
