Last year's headlines were dominated by news of three amazing new hypercars, coming from Porsche, Ferrari and McLaren. All three make about 900 horsepower and use electric motors in combination with their internal combustion engine.
Despite their lightness and unprecedented amount of power for a track car, everybody had that nagging feeling that the Bugatti Veyron still had more oomph and was probably faster. Thanks to this amazing drag race, we now know that's not true, at least for the LaFerrari.
Going up against a standard 1000 horsepower Veyron is the red dragon from Maranello, the most powerful of the hybrids with 963PS (950hp) and 900 Nm (664 lb-ft) of torque. The Italian model manages to win convincingly, but not by a lot.
For a 10 year old car, the Veyron handles itself pretty well and on one of the passes made on this empty runway, it's neck and neck with the LaFerrari. We're willing to bet the SS version will beat the LaFerrari in that same environment.
Boasting less power, the McLaren P1 and Porsche 918 Spyder would probably still lose to a Veyron. But there's a catch. The Bugatti weighs a massive 1,888 kg (4,162 lb), which is over 600 kg more than the LaFerrari. On a track, that sort of difference would humiliate the old king of the supercars. Still, it's nice to see that just before retirement, the old champion can still throw a decent punch and teach the young kids respect.
The Bugatti was actually designed for these sorts of straightly activities while all the new hybrid hypercars are multidimensional. Which is better? I'll just take all of them, thanks!
