Christmas will arrive early for Ferrari fans this years, as we are only days away from the moment when the Prancing Horse is expected to give us the racing incarnation of its LaFerrari. Nonetheless, Maranello’s engineers have a more complex flagship diversification program on their hands, as the Spider version is also expected. A LaFerrari mule was recently spotted and all the signs point to the open-air story.
As you can see above, the LaFerrari mule was wearing heavy camouflage, with the hypercar being spied running around casually in traffic, in the proximity of the Maranello factory - the pic comes from Gonçalo Maccario Automotive Photography.

What's in a name? that which we call a horse

Before we start talking about the car, we have to explain the Spider moniker has not been confirmed. Given the fact that this isn’t one of the Italian carmaker’s regular models, if we can call Prancing Horses so, it might receive a bespoke badge to signal the open-air capabilities.

For instance, while the Ferrari 458 Italia was paired with the 458 Spider, the automaker added an “Aperta” at the end of the 458 Speciale’s designation when creating the convertible version for the track-savy 458.

While the camo may cover the car and those strange front wheels might be a bit confusing (the rear wheels are the standard LaFerrari ones), there’s one hint that definitely points towards the Spider, namely the conventional doors - Ferrari is expected to adopt this solution for the LaFerrari Spider.

The roof is the biggest mystery

Speaking of changes, the biggest question regarding this hypercar is the mechanism used for its roof. The elegant folding solution of the 458 Spider would be the most likely version, but certain unofficial sources even talk about a pair or manually removable roof panels - we can’t see how somebody who’s ready to pay something in the seven-digit area would ever want to work out by manually removing the roof though.

Speaking of the price, an educated guess leads to a value of around $2 million (EUR1.6 million). With Ferrari being Ferrari, the Spider will treat its driver with the same level of perceived performance as the coupe, but, besides the possibility to drive with the elements in your hair, the Spider will bring another bonus - extra exclusivity. While 499 units of the 963 hp LaFerrari are being brought to the world, the Spider will come in a series that could be as limited as 10 units.

We’re not such big fans of mysterious matters and we wanted to show you how the LaFerrari Spider could look like, which is why we’ve added a rendering below.
