Everyone is waiting for Lamborghini to make up its mind regarding its future SUV project. The thing is, the company has led us to believe that it will happen but in every official interview, the officials back off and try to minimize the rumors.
In a recent interview with Road and Track, CEO Stephan Winkelmann pointed to a somewhat shady future for the third model in the line-up, talking about forced induction and hybrid technology among others.

“It's clear that if we are going to have a third model, if it's an SUV—we are working on something like this, without having an official goal—this could be a car where you have turbos, you also have for the first time hybridization, inside a Lamborghini,” he said.

So, in case the car eventually makes it to production, you can rest assured that it’s going to be special from more than one point of view. Yes, we know Lambo used to build the LM002 SUV back in the 1980s but this is completely new.

The thing is, the Sant’Agata Bolognese company claimed that their only hybrid creation so far, the Asterion, won’t make it into production. Now we’re assuming they meant only that particular car as the Urus could definitely use that technology.

It’s not only for bragging rights either. The SUV could turn out to be a highly profitable model that would also help with the EU regulations on CO2 emission standards. If it sells in the thousands, it would drop the fleet average, allowing Lamborghini to continue making atmospheric plants. Not for too long though.

China, the Middle East and the US are seen as big markets for an SUV

Speaking about the supercar market, the CEO also admitted that it’s not doing so great at the moment. At the moment, it’s stagnating but the SUV Lambo could be well received in China, the Middle East and the US as well as some key markets in Europe.

Other than that, the company will have to rely on its traditional breadwinners, the Aventador and Huracan that are doing great at the moment, orders keeping the factory working for almost the entirety of 2015.
