The McLaren P1 GTR is the track version of the already mental road-legal P1. It was developed so that it would put to shame the hybrid hypercar and win races on the track, being specially tuned for such purposes. Now, a company wants to make the GTR road-legal.
It’s all just a conundrum if you ask us. Hampshire-based specialist Lanzante Motorsports says that they want to offer the P1 GTR customers the chance to take their track beasts out for a drive on normal roads.
That is a bit of a surprise and a useless offer if you ask us. That’s because the GTR version can only be sold to people that have already bought the normal P1. That means that the guys buying the hybrid hypercar are the only ones that can also buy a track version of it. Now Lanzante comes around and says that they can turn the car back into a road-legal version. It’s just mind-numbing.
Up until now more than 20 £2 million (€2.7 million or US$2.8 million) GTRs have been sold, and Lanzante saw a market here (even though only 35 GTRs will be made). According to Autocar, they will be working closely with McLaren to make sure everything is both safe and legal.
Compared to the standard version, the track car has a kerb weight of 1,440 kg (3,175 lbs) compared to the stock version’s 1,547 kg (3,411 lbs) and more power, the total output climbing to 1,000 HP. Other changes include better aerodynamics and downforce a new fixed ride height on race-prepared suspension, a fixed rear wing capable of using DRS, and a new exclusively designed exhaust.
Why would someone that already owns a road-legal P1 and bought a track-ready GTR want to do this sort of thing to his/her car is beyond us. Even so, we’re pretty sure there’s a market for such work out there as long as you can afford it.
