Porsche is going all-out with development testing of the 911, Boxster and Cayman models at the Nurburgring. Most of the work has been completed, so we might see all these amazing new cars at the Frankfurt Motor Show next week.
That could explain why this particular Boxster Spyder is being photographed. But the way they are doing things is a little awkward. Instead of using a real camera car, they stuck the photographer in the boot of a BMW.
That's not just any BMW, but the M235i with extra M Performance parts (like that front bumper and the decals on the side). The Bavarian's mightiest 2 Series is considered by many to be a direct rival for the Cayman, the Boxster's twin brother.
It's a little cheaper, and its 3-liter turbocharged engine with 326 horsepower is enough to challenge many of Stuttgart's finest sportscars. However, Porsche might be calling it quits on the power war.
Recent reports suggest all the Boxster and Cayman engines will be replaced by 2-liter turbocharged ones. Both entry-level models will have a 240 horsepower output, which is a substantial decrease from today’s 265 hp Boxster and 275 hp Cayman. We believe the Boxster Spyder and GTS models will offer 370 hp, which is a decent number.
However, only time will tell if a 4-cylinder turbocharged engine is a good way to go. For a sportscar, the naturally aspirated solution is usually the best one because it's more responsive. But when you pay €80,000 for a new Porsche, torque and acceleration are also very important. You don't want that M235i to humiliate you in a straight line.
Cosmetic changes for the Boxster Spyder are quite small, which is to be expected considering it's a brand new car. However, they have tweaked the headlights and taillights.
