Peugeot 308 Racing Cup Turns On the Horsepower Tap in Frankfurt With 1.6-liter Turbo Mill

Remember when some months ago, Peugeot revealed a monster-hybrid concept in Shanghai, called the 308 R HYbrid? The beast packed 500 horsepower, and the same recipe is being applied again for the Frankfurt Motor Show.

This time, the French carmaker is playing the motorsports card with the Peugeot 308 Racing Cup. By now, you must be curious what lies under the racer's body, so we won't hold that against you.

Moreover, we'll tell you that the Peugeot 308 Racing Cup uses a 1.6-liter turbocharged engine that churns out 308 horsepower (38 horsepower more than what the 308 GTi puts on the table). However, that's what the carmaker managed to come up with in the initial development stage, as Peugeot claims more power will be squeezed from the 1.6 aggregate.

The ponies are controlled and unleashed via a six-speed automatic gearbox, but the one behind the wheels also has a paddle shifter at his disposal, which should give a boost for the fun factor and the overall racing experience.

Design-wise - and we guess you already spotted that - the 308 Racing Cup is based on the 308 GTi but with a twist.

That wide body kit takes the car's total width to 1,910 mm and rests on 18-inch wheels while at the rear a huge WTCC-inspired wing thrones over the entire vehicle. Also, six-piston brake calipers provide the stopping power, a crucial aspect especially when you're on your worst behaviour on the racetrack, burning rubber and taking the car to the limit.

The Peugeot 308 Racing Cup comes to replace the RCZ Racing Cup and in doing that, it didn't forget to respect the diet PSA engineers prescribed, so don't be surprised when we tell you the racer tips the scales at around 1,000-1,050 kg (2,204-2,315 lbs).

We'll be present in Frankfurt next month where we'll see the Peugeot 308 Racing Cup in the metal, so do count on us to provide fresh info and impressions on the car.
