Let’s ignore the fuss created by the solar eclipse that could be witnessed in the Northern hemisphere and take a look at another gimmick that involves lighting, but falls on the man-made side: a phosphorescent Nissan Leaf EV traveling on a glowing highway.
Yup, it’s exactly how you read it, since Nissan came up with the idea of covering one Leaf EV in phosphorescent paint and letting it drive on Holland’s glowing highway. This is not a fairytale, but the decor should looks like inspired from one. I mean, automotive-wise...you get the point.

So, Nissan applied some glow-in-the-dark paint on its Leaf. So what? Well, first of all, it doesn’t look like that fugly wrapping you get to see on Lamborghinis and second, since there’s a highway that also glows in the dark, why not put the two together and shoot a video, take some pictures and whatnot?

In fact, the highway running through the city of Oss only glows in the dark for about 600 meters (1,968 ft) but that was enough for the Leaf. The idea belongs to designer Daan Roosegaarde and the principle is quite simple: during the day, the road surface absorbs sunlight and emits it at night, for between eight to ten hours.

The Smart Highway has photo-luminescent strips on the outside that are meant to guide drivers in the dark and therefore increase visibility and safety.

“The Glowing Lines on The Smart Highway replace standard street lighting to reduce electrical energy consumption. To have the world’s first glow-in-the-dark car on our road is a privilege and it mirrors goals that we want to achieve with our Smart Highway,” explained Daan Roosegaarde, the mastermind behind the project.
