At this year’s Los Angeles Auto Show, Cadillac decided to unveil the weapon it’s going to use against BMW’s M4: the ATS-V Coupe. Admittedly, there’s also a sedan version just like there is an M3, but we’re looking at the cooler, less practical models today.
The ATS-V Coupe is the one model that actually has a chance to rain on BMW’s parade. Up until now, the battle has been fought between the 4 Series and the regular ATS Coupe, but now things are getting hardcore with each model gaining a consonant.

The Champ

For nearly 30 years now, BMW’s M3 Coupe has been the champion of its segment. To be completely honest, it didn’t actually have a competitor up until a couple of years ago. At least one that would actually stand a chance.

That competitor came in the shape of the C63 AMG. Sure, the Audi RS4 is also a pretty strong case, but due to the four-ringed company’s strategy of either keeping it in sedan shape or Avant guise, things are a bit more complicated there.

Therefore, the last 30 years had only one name for enthusiasts that wanted track performance and a daily driver: M3. Now, the Coupe version is replaced by an all new model, the M4.

Coming fitted with a 3-liter twin turbocharged inline 6-cylinder engine making 431 HP and 550 Nm (406 lb-ft) of torque, the new Coupe is a deadly weapon. It’s also light on its feet and will do 100 km/h (62 mph) in 4.1 seconds when fitted with the automatic 7-speed DCT gearbox. The 0 - 60 mph (96 km/h) run is 0.2 seconds faster. For the 6-speed manual, that time increases another 0.2 seconds.

The Challenger

On the other side of the ocean, we have the American challenger: the Cadillac ATS-V Coupe. For this model, the engineers went with a 3.6-liter V6 twin-turbo setup making 455 HP and 445 lb-ft (603 Nm) of torque. As you can see, better numbers than the M4.

You can also have it in either a 6-speed manual guise or with the new 8-speed gearbox from the 2016 Corvette Z06, a gearbox that GM claims it shifts gears faster than Porsche’s PDK.

With this top spec choice, the ATS-V Coupe will do 60 mph in 3.9 seconds, the same as the M4. It’s a pretty close race. If our gut feeling is correct, we think that the Caddy is a bit heavier than the Bimmer. We don’t have official numbers yet so we’ll have to wait to see if we were right.

The question is... Which one would you pick?
