Piaggio MP3-Based Scooter Sharing Program Debuts in Milan in June

A scooter sharing service will finally debut this summer in the Italian city of Milan. Delayed, but apparently ready to roll after all, the scooter sharing service will become operational in June this year. If proven as lucrative as other similar endeavors, we might get to see the thing grow, adding more vehicles to the current fleet, and expanding to other cities, too.

The company which will operate the new scooter sharing business will be Enjoy, who is already active in the car sharing segment. Enjoy has ongoing operations in Milan and Turin, and their cars are easy-to-recognize red Fiat 500s.

Three-wheeled Piaggio MP3 scooters ahoy!

We've already seen sharing programs using electric scooters in France, but this new endeavor will involve petrol-powered vehicles. The new sharing program will use a fleet of 150 Piaggio MP3 three-wheeled leaning scooters. Helmets and single-use head covers will also be provided, as well as a free smartphone app which allow customers to spot the scooters that are available.

We are expecting more details about this program, as we'd like to know about insurance, prices and fueling options. After all, when you're in a hurry, getting to a scooter with a tank that's almost empty miles away from the nearest petrol station is not exactly our idea of mobility.

Vehicle sharing programs are probably one of the smartest ideas in very crowded cities and using electric vehicles also allows motorized (but clean) traffic in downtown exclusion zones. Stay tuned for more.
