Record-Beating Electric Dragster Reaches Over 300 MPH on the Drawing Board

Do you know those nitro nostalgia dragsters with engines placed in front of the driver? Yeah, they’re there only for show and probably more of today’s gas/nitromethane dragsters will sit next to them in the future because it seems there’s a rising interest in electric dragsters nowadays.
They’re not making the same ground-trembling show as a classic dragster but they surely can match their performance through almost instant torque. No gas mask required this time, because the thing that spins the wheels only emits a buzz and a whining noise.

The current world record speed for electric powered vehicles belongs to The Buckeye Bullet, which was built by the Center for Automotive Research at Ohio State University and went 307.7 mph (495.2 km/h) this year at the Bonnevile Salt Flats. But that may fall fall as Australian based Michael Fragomeni and his Top EV Racing team plans to build something even faster.

“Arc’d Up” is the name the team chose for their top electric dragster which is aimed at reaching 0 to 329.3 mph (530 km/h) in just 4.5 seconds. If you can’t really put the finger on the scale of how the heck does that feel, imagine you’re getting from 0 to 60 mph (96 km/h) in about half a second and keep on going at around the same rate.

Top EV Racing’s dragster will put the driver thorough 7.3 Gs under acceleration and 6.2 Gs when braking, all the fun coming in the greenest way possible. The drag car is recharged using photovoltaic solar and spectator-assisted charging (whatever that means) and the team said they planted 523 trees so far on their webpage to counteract the impact of the manufacturing process of all materials needed by the dragster.

The Arc’d Up has the same power as 100,000 cordless drills, which should sum up to over 2,500 hp. Its custom driveline “amplifiers” are rated at over 2,000,000 Watts RMS.

So if you find a way to connect a kettle to the dragster, you can boil around 83 cups of water each second. Bring some tea.

The rear wing attached at the back creates 5,000 kg (11,000 lbs) of downforce at 380.2 mpp (612 km/h) while the driver’s seat has to sustain a load of about 700 kg (1543 lbs) during acceleration if the driver weighs under 100 kg (220 lb).

All these sound almost exactly as what a top fuel dragster can do today. The only thing missing here is the date when we’ll see the Arc’d Up in action, but do keep us in your news feed to stay updated.
