4,088 lbs is what the scale showed which translates into 1,854 kilograms in the metric system. That’s is a hefty increase over the Coupe. To be more precise, it is an increase of 524 lbs (237 kg) over the 3,564 lbs (1,616 kg) of the F82.

That weight will be felt in every circumstance. Whether you’re driving to the mall, drag racing or charging the track, you’ll be feeling it. Another area affected will be the fuel consumption figures that will go up by a more than decent amount.

Spread across the chassis, the rear-right corner was the heaviest at 1,102 lbs followed by left front with 997 lbs, left right with 996 lbs and right front with 993 lbs. The front axle accounts for 48.65 percent of the weight while the rear axle carries 51.35 of it.

Why is it so heavy?

BMW said from the get go that the convertible will be roughly 500 lbs heavier than its coupe counterpart. That’s because they chose to stick with the already known recipe and use a hardtop instead of a soft top. That added serious weight because a plethora of electric motors had to be added to fold the roof.

Keep in mind that the roof of the M3 and M4 Coupe is also made of super light Carbon Fiber Reinforced Polymer, also known as CFRP. For some reason BMW chose not to go with the same choice on the Convertible, thus increasing the weight even more.

In addition to these two essential points, convertible usually have more reinforcing done in order to keep the car stable in high-stress environments, since they have to do without a roof most of the time.

So, the 4,088 lbs weight does seem like a lot but it also shows the potency of the S55 engine that, even though it’s only a 3-liter, can handle it with grace. We’re now patiently waiting for the summer to test things out.
