Renault Duster Oroch Is Officially Ready to Be Awesome

Renault today displayed its first mid-size pickup. It's based on the Duster crossover SUV and the Oroch concept from 2014, offering chunkier looks and a practical bed instead of the regular trunk space. What's not to like?

The new Duster Oroch slots in between the half-ton and one-ton pickups. It's available with four doors and five seats. Renault says that it's more compact and nimble, with plenty of loading space. Based on Duster, this pick-up is ideal for combined use for people who still need a something for the whole family and work.

The Oroch is scheduled for launch in the second half of 2015, so we don't have very much in the way of details. However, it's reasonable to expect the engines to carry over from the regular model. The tailgate has a "2.0" badge on it, so we're pretty much guaranteed to get an ethanol-compatible 2-liter with around 140 horsepower of power.

From a cosmetics point of view, we like what we see. The front end is a little beefier, so it looks like a serious bit of offroad kit. But most of the differences are at the rear. The shoulder line above the wheel has been extended, given a perception of muscularity. The same square tubes used for the roof rails have made their appearance as part of a cage for the bed.

The taillights are completely new, of course. Regular Dusters have them up high, but that wouldn't work on this pickup. Between them are a tailgate and a wide step.

"This new model, Renault's first pickup, is the next step in Renault's globalization strategy. With Renault Duster Oroch, the brand is launching its offensive in the competitive pickup segment,"
said Ashwani Gupta, Renault's Global Head of Light Commercial Vehicles.
