Romain Jerome's New Subcraft Timepiece Brings Digital Looks to Mechanical Works

Apple Watch was unveiled for a while now, but for some reason it didn’t quite get all the spotlight it was expected. Maybe it’s because luxury and digital rarely get together, especially when it comes to high-end timepieces that normally cost big money. On the other hand, this year’s Baselworld show somehow managed to surprise the luxury watches market with a lot of new concepts that might as well reinvent the mechanical function as being the new cool.

We’re not saying that a smart watch isn’t the next thing we’re adding to our gizmo collection, but it somehow feels like these gadgets are not really what we think of when we want a proper timepiece. Maybe it’s because the petrolhead inside tells us that a real man’s watch has to be... well, a real watch.

Take Romain Jerome’s newborn, the Subcraft. It’s a luxury timepiece that manages to keep things futuristic without discarding the mechanic side of things. Working with such a movement housed inside a light titanium case, it displays the hour on a side readout and the minutes on a dial on top of the case. Features that immediately stand out include the lateral movement, linear time display, jump hours and a retrograde hand.

In other words, the front display moves across the hours, sliding from number to number then returning to the beginning after noon or midnight. And don’t worry about night vision, because the Subcraft has a small luminous tube on the hour hand which will help you read the exact hour.

Since we are talking about something quite specific for Romain Jerome, a luxury retailer who is normally creating rather classical designs, according to Tech Crunch, the limited to 99 units edition is available at select retailers and will cost a stunning $24,000.
