Storm Pulse Electric Concept Bike Promises 236-Mile Range

Several students from the University of Technology in Eindhoven, the Netherlands revealed the Storm Pulse, a most ambitious electric bike concept that can to as much as 236 miles per charge. The figure stands for 380 km, and is well in the ballpark of what high-efficiency gas-powered touring-adventure bikes can do.

There is no magic at work in the Storm Pulse project, accounting for such a geat range for an e-bike. The secret, however, lies in the huge battery pack these fellows were able to squeeze into the build.

And because adding a lot of battery cells to the bike does come at a price, the top-spec Storm tips the scales at 340 kg or 750 pounds. Definitely not the slender sport bike some of us are maybe looking for, but still way lighter than many other American cruisers out there.

Still, the Storm Pulse can deliver speeds of 100 mph

As fat as it may seem, the Storm Pulse can reach 100 mph (160 km/h) and will do 0 to 62 mph in 5 seconds. The touring version of the bike can load 24 cartridges, for a total energy storage capacity of 28.5kWh, which can be reduced to only a half in race trim.

The charging time is 8 hours, which may sound a bit long if you're renting track time. However, a 0-80% charge needs only 38 minutes! The frame is a self-developed aluminium sheet unit with Hossack forks and custom shocks.

The motor is a 35 kW unit with 70 kW peaks and 120 Nm (88.4 lb-ft) nominal torque with twice as high spikes and belt final drive. The students are continuously developing the bike and plan to take it for a trip around the world in 80 days in the future.

No mentions of the Storm Pulse making it into production were made, but the hybrid battery pack offering touring and sport trims is a neat idea. You can also support the development of the Storm Pulse by adopting cells, cell packs, battery slices and more.
