Suzuki GSX-R250 Spied in China

It's been less than a month since we reported about the new small-displacement machines Suzuki was rumored to have in preparation, but things are on the move.

A spy photo of what is believed to be the final version of the Suzuki GSX-R250 made it on the internet. It was reportedly taken at the Chinese Suzuki factory in Changzhou, Eastern China. As we said earlier, the machine appears to be largely derived from the Inazuma 250, so we have all the reasons to believe it is a model destined for the Asian markets.

The small Inazuma has a parallel twin engine with a 248cc displacement, but it is not performance-oriented, at least not in the sportbike meaning of the term "performance."

With 24.5 horsepower, the Inazuma/ Suzuki GSX-R250 is hardly a competitor in the Western markets. Even more, the big manufacturers have already replaced their quarter-liter sport bikes in these markets with 300cc machines, and they are playing in a superior league.

Still, the Suzuki GSX-R250 might be a hint for the 300cc Gix

Honestly, we're not willing to abandon hope that Hamamatsu will not leave their youngest fans in Europe and North America staring into the sun.

That is, we do hope that this GSX-R250 will be complemented by a 300cc-ish version. The styling is almost there, and the current spied machine looks more than modern enough for the western markets.

Hamamatsu could even retain the frame and swingarm, while making sure they can handle the extra grunt of a more powerful engine. Anyway, minor tweaks could be made to the existing parts to transform the Asia-bound GSX-R250 into a mean sibling of the 600 and 1000 Gixxers. Or is our optimism in vain?
