Scion Is the Winter Formula One Race Car Of the Sled World

Since Game of Thrones Season 5 is still about three weeks away from kick off we’ll assume that “winter is coming” is a line we are still allowed to say. And we’re going to have to use it for this top-notch sled we’re more than sure you want to learn about. It’s called Scion and has nothing to do with Toyota Motor Corporation.

We found ourselves reporting on a snow-stuck Lamborghini being towed by a Range Rover the other day, a Lexus IS300 towing a sofa on ice recently and even a new winter sport called “parachute snowmobiling”. Compared to these oddities, writing of an high-performance sled almost feels normal. Mind you, this is not just any other sled and here’s why.

Designed by a winter sports enthusiast from New Zealand, Scion by Snolo Sleds is conceived as an adult snow-toy, It's supposed to offer a different feeling than skying or snowboarding, yet keeps some of their best parts.

Created as a more-affordable model than its prior Sealth-X sled, this puppy is made of UV resistant fiber reinforced high density polyethylene monocoque construction, a non-stick sled body and Tetron impact absorbing seat padding covered with waterproof 600D nylon.

We’re looking at Formula One style seating, replaceable polished stainless steel and alloy runners. Sean Boyd, the founder and concept design director at Snolo Sleds, claims that Scion was inspired by motorcycle handling and F1 race car design. To prove his point he even had USA olympic medalist and world luge champion Chris Thorpe try it out and it appeared he was totally satisfied.

I was humbled by this sled, initially. It challenges you, it rewards you, but by no means will you master this sled on your first day out. You can go from carving to slipping and drifting the turns to just stopping on a dime,” the champ said.

On the other hand, it appears that Scion did not convince people on Kickstarter enough to actually meet the $40,000 pledge. That doesn’t mean you can’t find it on sale online for $549, of course.
