It was a thrill for the motorsport fans to have the chance to see names like Senna and Prost competing again in a Formula event this weekend. Although we are talking about the Formula E Race Off and not about a real race, the crowd present at the Gfinity Arena in London could see Bruno Senna, nephew of the late Ayrton Senna, and Nico Prost, son of 4-time F1 champion Alain Prost, going head-to-head.
The fans arrived early and started practicing to earn a shot at racing alongside their Formula 1 heroes, with the fastest 16 going into the semi-finals.
After some fierce competition, Zak Scholes claimed the Formula E Race Off fan trophy.
Reenacting one of the most classic rivalries in motorsport, the event concluded with Prost and Senna going against each other. In a best-of-three head-to-head playoff, it was Senna who took the victory.
“It’s been a fun day, watching and taking part on a virtual track. I think eSports is the future, especially when getting people into sports and interacting with the fans. Video games and computer are getting close and closer to reality,” Bruno Senna, Mahindra Racing driver, stated.
Renault e.dams’ driver Nico Prost said that “I’d like to come back after a bit more practise. I’m really amazed by the whole event and the turnout from the fans. Some of them are so fast, and it was a really nice event to be a part of, especially as the first one for Formula E.”
Jann Mardenborough, Nissan Nismo works driver and GT Academy winner, commented that he had never been to an eSports event before, but he was blown away by how big the competition was. “It’s strange when you’re competing at home with no pressure, but an event like this is completely different. It’s certainly the route to go down to engage with a younger audience and look to the future.” he said.
