Every year, fans of the Golf GTI come to the shores of Lake Worthersee in Austria to talk about turbo boost and carbon fiber. In recent years, Audi, Skoda and SEAT owners have joined them. To thank its fans for their loyalty, each brand usually makes a concept and in 2015 the Fabia has been turned into a unique pickup truck.
The vehicle is called FUNstar and is basically a 2015 5-door model that has been turned into a sports truck by 23 young Skoda trainees. The 2 girls and 21 boys have been thinking what to build since November last year, and you can see how much thought they put into the project in the video below. They realized there is quite a lot of interest in pickup truck conversions and chose the Fabia because it's new and easy to work with.
Their work will be on display a few weeks from now, during the 34th GTI Meeting at Worthersee from 13 to 16 May 2015. The FUNstar rolls around on 18-inch ‘Gemini’ alloys from the Octavia RS. The engine is a 110 hp 1.2-liter TSI, linked to the 7-speed DSG automatic.
The apprentices wanted to use a 1.8-liter TSI, like the one on the new Polo GTI, but it was too big to be easily installed in the engine bay. Instead, they played with green LED lights that illuminate the road under the car. Like some premium cars, the FUNstar also has LED projectors displaying the Skoda logo on the ground.
The whole rear section of the car, including the rear doors, has been chopped and replaced with a pickup body. Wider B-pillars have been designed to compensate for the lost structural rigidity. The interior features reupholstered seats, green accents, a 1,400-watt sound system that includes a 200-watt subwoofer and a sporty steering wheel.
