A recent report from Simpsons Skoda, a UK website, seems to suggest the Czech automaker wants the new Superb sedan to go fast, but not super-fast.
The company's CEO, Winfried Vahland, has apparently admitted there are a few ideas floating around for a sportier version of the flagship model. However, this won't be a vRS model. Most likely, the alternative offered by Skoda is to combine optional sports suspension, a visual package and a decent engine, just like you do with a Passat R-line.
What's puzzling is that reports from Czech publications suggest the Superb will eventually have a total of 8 engines, which is just 2 less than the Volkswagen Passat. So we thought that either the 240 hp 2.0 bi-turbo diesel or the 280 hp 2.0 TSI would be transferred over. Wouldn't those be enough to make a Superb vRS, since they offer higher output than the Octavia hot equivalents.
Our own sources suggested the most expensive Superb 3 will have a 280 hp engine, all-wheel drive and a new DSG twin-clutch gearbox.
Right now, the most powerful car Skoda offers on the MQB platform is the Octavia vRS, which delivers 220 hp from its 2-liter turbo, shared with the Golf GTI. However, a hotter version is expected to debut later this year and could deliver either 265 or 280 hp, aided by a limited slip differential.
At the end of the day, Skoda has managed to sell 1.04 million cars last year, a record number. They don't really need a performance model, since most of their customers don't care about this go-fast, tire-screeching stuff.
Paying somewhere in excess of €50,000 for any Skoda sounds outrageous, but seeing the winged arrow overtaking a BMW 528i would be priceless.
Last year, Skoda sold a total of 91,100 Superb sedans and estates, 3.5% less than in 2013.

A new MQB-based flagship
The market launch of the Superb is planned for mid-2015, but the reveal will take place next month. Using the MQB platform, engineers have managed to make the third generation model lighter by about 75 kilos. Compared to the outgoing car, total length will increase by 20 mm to 4.86 meters, while the wheelbase will be stretched by a massive 80 mm to 2.84 meters.Last year, Skoda sold a total of 91,100 Superb sedans and estates, 3.5% less than in 2013.
