smart fortwo Brabus Cabrio Caught on Video, Looks like a Hoot to Drive

You may or may not like the smart Fortwo, and we’ll admit to the fact that Daimler is making it pretty hard for us with a questionable design and a very high asking price, but the car is fun to drive.

How could it not be? It’s a box of a car with rear-wheel-drive and a wheelbase the size of a matchbox. It suffers a little in the engine department, but then again, you don’t really need much to get this thing going. Plus, you’ll mostly be driving it on city streets, so speed isn’t really essential, unless you enjoy giving money to the police.

We’ve already seen spyshots of the smart forfour, Daimler’s version of the Renault Twingo, and now the smaller, two-seater variant has popped up, sporting similarly-looking front bumper and double exhaust. This particular car is also the open top Cabrio version, which means it’ll probably cost a lot more than most people are willing to pay for such a car.

As if to prove a point, the test car even performs an acceleration test as it pulls out from the stop lights, and even though the engine and exhaust don’t sound too enticing, it seems to gather plenty of speed in a relatively short time. We’re not expecting anything ground breaking, but it should be enough to make the smart fortwo Brabus (Cabrio or not) an enjoyable drive.

We should remind you that the standard smart Fortwo can be had in two engine flavors, a naturally aspirated 1.0-liter three-cylinder unit that should be avoided at all costs as it only churns out 72 hp, and even those aren’t very convincing, and the Renault-sourced 0.9-liter three-cylinder turbo offering 90 hp.

What exactly is going to power the Brabus versions is still anyone’s guess, but a very good assumption would require raiding the Renault stores once again: the French company has a decent 1.2 turbo engine that currently goes as high as 120 hp, but with a little tuning it could probably be convinced to go even higher.
