Peugeot sells a lot of 308 compacts now that they've launched the all-new, much improved model. There are many things to like, but just imagine how good this Peugeot would be if only it were that little bit faster, that little bit more engaging to drive. The new 308 GT is that car, not quite a full hot hatch, but very fast and competent.
Today, we got to experience both models at the Paris Motor Show, taking an up-close and personal look at the fit and finish. As you'd expect from a modern full-spec Peugeot, the 308 GT has a premium look about it, on part with anything Volkswagen makes. A very deep shade of blue, LED headlights and sharply cut bi-color alloy wheels bring out the best in their design.
A body kit has been added, but it's subtle like one of Audi's S line models. We liked the twin wide exhaust pipes they installed at the back, the black diffuser and other small touches, such as the badging.
Stepping inside, we were greeted by more shiny black elements and some red accents. Peugeot installed a new flat-bottomed steering wheel with perforated leather insets and GT badging in the middle. The seats are covered in black leather and offer some side bolstering without being uncomfortable. Downside? There is one: the lack of a manual handbrake, just like on the new GTI.
Boasting only 180 PS, the diesel model has 25 less ponies to offer than the 1.6 turbo. However, its 400 Nm (295 lb-ft) of torque make it a great motorway companion, as does the fuel consumption of 4 l/100km (70.6 mpg UK).
Prices have just been announced in France today. The 308 GT 5-door with a 1.6 THP engine and a manual is €30,450. Go for the diesel and that's increased to €33,700. As expected, the estate model costs slightly more at €31,400 (for the 1.6).

How much power do I get if I buy the 308 GT?
There are two engines to chose from, either a 1.6-liter petrol or a new 2-liter diesel. The choice is really up to you, but we think the diesel is preferable and more in tune with the times. The 1.6-liter THP is only available with a manual six-speed gearbox, but the diesel model comes with a brand new automatic transmission called EAT6.Boasting only 180 PS, the diesel model has 25 less ponies to offer than the 1.6 turbo. Anything else I should know about?
Deliveries will commence at the beginning of January, 2015. This isn't a full-on hot hatch and comes with a suspension setup features "pseudo MacPherson at the front, deformable beam at the rear", basically a reworked version of the basic standard system.Prices have just been announced in France today.
