Spyshots: 2016 Porsche Boxster RS Spyder Shows Ducktail Spoiler, Aggressive Bumper

The number of Boxster models Porsche sells is a negligible drop in the ocean compared to their large SUVs. But Stuttgart's top engineers still have a lot of love for the sportscar that save the company from the brink of destruction all those years ago and are working on a more potent version.

Porsche has just launched a more hardcore Boxster called the GTS a couple of months ago, but it seems they're not done with it. This mystery prototype has recently been spotted in Scandinavia and sports a big ducktail rear wing, lowered suspension and the most aggressive front bumper yet fitted to the Type 981 generation.

Though the name has not yet been officially discussed, it's rumored that the car we see here is called the Boxster RS Spider. The Germans are also working on a coupe called the Cayman GT4, but unlike that one, the Boxster will be available with a manual transmission and will be a little less hardcore.

As for the engine, officials have confirmed a 4-cylinder turbo boxer engine will replace the current 2.7, 3.4 and 3.8-liter four-cylinder units. However, this more focused model may stick with the naturally aspirated unit and receive more power, somewhere in the region of 350 hp, which is more than doable considering the most basic 911 Carrera has that much.

Like the old Boxster Spyder from the last generation, the new RS model will also go on a small diet, ditching some of the unnecessary comfort features. It's all too east to dream of a super-hardcore model, but the fact that this prototype has standard steel brakes, no roll cage or rear diffuser suggests we're not looking at the best Boxster Porsche will ever built… at least not yet.
