Spyshots: All-New Smart Fortwo Cabrio Caught Completely Undisguised

All the cars are the same, noting original is ever created, right? Wrong, just look at the Smart car and the way it continues to change what we consider an automobile. It's almost like the Porsche 911 in the way that it continues to evolve from a weird concept to something that works.

Pretty soon, the 911 and Smart Fortwo will have something in common other than their rear-mounted engine, as Smart engineers are almost ready with testing of the Mk3 Cabrio. Yes, it has the fun-in-the-sun factor and so much more besides that.

This fully uncamouflaged prototype was spied recently at one of Daimler's favorite test locations in Spain. The fact that it's not hiding any more suggests the launch could happen within a few months if not weeks.

Mechanically, it will be nearly identical to the hardtop model. But the smallest convertible in the world will still look original and fresh, thanks to a variety of optional paint finishes and contrasting accents.

The third generation Fortwo is powered by either either of two 3-cylinder engines. The base one is 1-liter making 71 hp and it's accompanied by a 0.9 turbo from Renault delivering 90 hp and 50% more torque. The gearboxes offered are also completely different to the ones from the outgoing Fortwo Cabrio, as you can now order a 5-speed manual. The auto option is far superior, as a Getrag-developed 6-speed twin-clutch of compact proportions replaces the automated manual.

As with the exterior, the interior is going to look much smarter, receiving more contemporary materials and an infotainment system based on the Renault R-Link. For customers with deeper pockets, Brabus' Tailor Made program will give access to luxurious leathers and finishes.
