For years, the Cayman has been sitting in the shadow of the 911, always liked buy never loved. For years, Porsche did everything it could to keep value in their core model, setting low volumes for their two-seater and refusing to add the best technology. But now, the two-seater car named after a reptile is ready to fight back with a model that's to be launched next year.
We are, of course, talking about the Cayman GT4, indirectly confirmed by Porsche and spotted in the wild on numerous occasions by our team of photographers. The latest set of photos they sent us reveals pretty much every rivet, bolt and carbon fiber component.
It's not like there's going to be any prominent changes going on, but the GT4 obviously differs from the regular Cayman through its front and rear bumper designs, not to mention that huge fixed rear wing. If you guys look close enough, you might notice that the car has two wings, the second one being a ducktail system like the on the 911.
The GT4 should also be noticeably more powerful than the regular Cayman GTS. From our understanding, the engine powering this monster is a 3.8-liter boxer unit that produces somewhere in the region of 400 horsepower. Oh and for the record, the current Cayman S and GTS both use a small 3.4-liter.
Since the GT4 is primarily designed to be a track tool, the manual gearbox will be ditched in favor of a competent PDK.
981 Cayman: the most genetically diverse 2-seater yet
While most companies struggle to keep their sportscar models alive, Porsche's badge has ensured the Cayman is thriving. Porsche has already shown the Cayman GTS, which now means there are three models to choose from. However, that's just a drop in the ocean compared to the 19 models of 911 you can buy.
The Cayman GT4 will be the fourth model in the range that's expected to grow even more when the new downsized turbocharged engines arrive in 2016 or so. Most sources suggest the GT4 will debut in early 2015. However, given the advanced state of this uncamouflaged prototype, maybe Porsche wants to surprise us at this Month's LA Auto Show or the Detroit Auto Show in January.
