First of all, we’d like to remind you that what you’re about to see is being done on a closed airstrip, under careful supervision. All the footage was recorded at Shift S3ctor this summer. Now that we got that out of the way, let’s take a look at our contender here.
The car we’re talking about is a Jeep Grand Cherokee SRT8, a monster in the first place that needs no more introduction. In standard guise it’s capable of pushing 420 HP out of a good old-fashion 6.1-liter V8. However, those days are long gone and the car we’re looking at today has a 7.4-liter twin-turbo setup.
How much power can such a combination make? Well, according to the owner, the numbers can go up to 1,200 HP, depending on the pressure in the turbos. At the moment of the recording of this video, they were running at around 14 psi which gave the Jeep around 840 HP, twice as much as the stock model.
That power showed its teeth on the drag strip, taking down cars that regular Jeeps couldn’t take on normally. The list include a Chevrolet Corvette, Lamborghini Aventador but also a tuned up GT-R.
In this freak show, a BMW E46 M3 also showed up. Scoff if you’d like as we would as well if we knew that it was stock but the owner knew better than to show up here with less than 350 HP. His car was also tuned and, from what we’ve seen, it was the only one that could give this Jeep a run for its money.
From what we can tell, that’s the HPF (horsepower freaks) Imola Red M3 which, rumor has it, was fitted with forced induction technology as well. The 3.2-liter engine is capable of formidable things, despite its size.
After heavily modifying the car, the guys from Lab22 did some tests. The numbers are absolutely incredible but it all depends on a variety of factors. With pump gas the car will put down 680 horsepower on the rear axle while getting it up to speed with E90 ethanol will get it past the 900 horsepower rating with around 1,000 Nm (700 lb-ft) of torque to play around with.
At the moment of this drag race, we don’t know what was in the tank of the M3 but one thing’s for sure, the driver had a lot of trouble keeping the rear axle in check.
