Since hybrid hypercars are the next best thing to race cars, we can’t see why Formula One champions would drive anything other than that. And with Hakkinen, a McLaren P1 makes a lot more sense than with his fellow F1 A-listers, considering he drove for McLaren most of his career.
He’s been a long way, since he first drove a Formula One vehicle back 1991, with the Team Lotus where he remained until 1992. Nevertheless, he’s been faithful to one team, considering he moved to McLaren the following year as a driver before being promoted to the race team following the departure of Michael Andretti.

As you may know, in 2002, Hakkinen announced that he would be retiring from F1 after nine months into his sabbatical. Even so, he did drive a couple of other events the years that followed, until 2007, when he announced his retirement from competitive motorsport. His on-again, off-again racing career clearly shows the man simply can’t stay away from the excitement of burning rubber. It’s no wonder he decided to invest a little bit of extra cash in tackling that interest.

Sure, “a little” may not be quite exactly what he paid for his fresh hypercar, considering you can’t even think of buying a new P1 without having at least $1 million to your disposal. We’re sure he still has some spare gas money left after this purchase. Let’s face it, there’s not one petrolhead you know that wouldn’t give all his savings away only to have that 3.8-liter twin-turbocharged V8 petrol engine at their disposal. That, and the in-house developed electric motor that together produce a total power and torque output of 916 horsepower and 722 lb-ft (928 Nm) of torque. LaFerrari and 918 Spyder fans are not included.

Now imagine all that power being sent to the rear wheels with a seven-speed dual clutch transmission ready for proper fun. On the other hand, we have to admit we always appreciate when these great pieces of machinery end up in the right hands, instead of being bought by rappers who just use them to show off.
