The NHTSA vehicle safety watchdog announced that the recent 4.7 million strong recall involving sub-standard Takata airbag inflators widened to 7.8 of them affected cars. This recall expansion adds approximately 3.1 million cars made by Chrysler, Ford (including the GT supercar), Mitsubishi and Subaru.
Following the shocking announcement on Monday, the Takata airbag epic continues today after no less than 193 cases of people injured or killed by shrapnel thrown by defective deployments of Takata airbags. Three people died in crashes related to the issue, with a further fatality currently under investigation.

No wonder the U.S. government issued recently an urgent plea to affected owners to bring their vehicles to dealers and replace those Takatas with new, safer airbags. Of course, the Japanese supplier is in the focal point of NHTSA's investigation, but the vehicle safety watchdog is also auditing carmakers to find exactly how they responded to the situation.

With this recent recall expansion, the most affected automaker by number of cars called back is Honda. No less than 5.1 million automobiles wearing the H logo up front are due a visit to Honda dealerships. This automotive safety situation also took its toll on the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration website, which crashes over and over again since Tuesday due to the great afflux of worried drivers.

If you're still experiencing problems with the NHTSA's search tool, we'd recommend you to check out the updated recalled vehicles list below, then call your local dealer to fix the issue as soon as possible.
