In case of memory loss from all that eggnog you’ve been drinking this time of the year, Tesla showed us last year how its new battery swap technology will work once implemented. After total silence on the subject, here comes the time to see and even use such system for the first time on public roads.
Starting this week, Tesla is piloting a pack swap program with invited Model S owners, who will be given the opportunity to replace their car’s battery at a specially designed facility located at Harris Ranch, CA, just across the street from the already existing Tesla Superchargers. However, don't hurry to the location right now, because this will be done after you'll do a reservation.
During the last year demo, Tesla managed to swap two batteries in the same time a guy managed to fill up the tank of an Audi A8 at the “fastest” gas station he could find in town.
However, due to the extra titanium shield the newer Tesla Model S got mounted underneath now, more time is needed and only one battery pack swap can be done in the same time, which is roughly about three minutes.
But don’t worry, because Tesla said to continue refine the system and the whole process could take less than a minute from the moment you park the car in the designated slot and the moment you take off.
Fast or Free
