The VW Golf R Variant Is the Only Wagon Blondes Like to Drive

I'm going to do a mea culpa and half a dozen Japanese polite bowing maneuvers for not showing you this video already. Why? Because it dates back to last summer. However, nobody knew about Sidney Industries until a few months ago when the guy with the blonde beard unveiled a Rocket Bunny version of the Golf GTI at the Essen Motor Show.
But it seems Volkswagen knew about Sidney because they were invited to Malaga, where they tested the all-new Golf R Variant at what we can only imagine was the official launch event.

Let's presume that you have a lot of money to spend on a fast, capable wagon from a German manufacturer, and you've always been a Volkswagen fanboy. The only thing stopping you from walking into your local dealership is the "but what will my wife think?" question. Sure, the R Variant has a big trunk, but so does a Skoda Octavia 1.6 TDI.

This next video suggests the S/O will love it, just as long as she's an avid driver.

On paper, things don't look so good. It's got a standard 300 hp turbo engine, standard DSG gearbox, and standard 4Motion all-wheel drive. Add a few luxury features and you end up with 1,574 kilograms (3,470 lbs), which is positively huge for a compact. To put that into perspective, the first BMW X3 weighed 1,630kg (3,593 lbs).

But regarding actual driving, having a little more weight on the rear axle is better for track use, just like we saw with the record-setting SEAT Leon ST Cupra that also takes the form of a hatch stretched into a wagon.

But whatever you do, don't tell anybody that your R Variant cost upwards of €43,000, just €7,000 shy of a Porsche Boxster. They'll just think you are crazy for spending that much on a Golf.

Editor's note: Dear Volkswagen USA, given how much fun this blonde is having, couldn't you at least consider importing this thing instead of the 2.0 TDI wagon? Thank you!
