The Misano World Circuit Marco Simoncelli Resurfaced, Phillip Island Problems Remembered

The Misano World Circuit Marco Simoncelli will receive an entirely new surface this year, alongside with multiple infrastructure upgrades which will make it a more environmentally-friendly venue. The racing complex has recently inaugurated a Flat Track runway, but new connections are planned now for the Misano circuit, and when ready, it will benefit from two extra configurations for the various events which take place on it.

The priorities are replacing the entire asphalt surface and better compliance with the safety regulations required by the FIM. Of course, the circuit will also remain compliant with all the safety requirements of various federations who organize events at the Misano track.

Misano will be upgraded using only Italian materials and local work force, proving its attachment to the local industry. At the same time, Santa Monica SpA, the company in charge of the whole operation is planning to make extensive use of photovoltaic panels for producing part of the energy required for maintaining the venue both on and off season.

We can hope the new surface will not duplicate the problems at Phillip Island

We can hope that the management of the Misano World Circuit Marco Simoncelli has learned a valuable lesson from the mishaps at the Phillip Island circuit last year. The resurfaced Australian venue proved to be excessively abrasive for the MotoGP tires. For safety reasons, the Race Direction imposed that the tires be changed after the 10th lap, while the length of the race was also shortened.

Marc Marquez and Honda had some issues in establishing a clear strategy for pit lane entry and tire changing bikes, and the world champion entered the 11th lap with the same tires. The black flag came out and Marc Marquez was disqualified for failure to comply with the Race Direction’s ruling.

There is plenty of testing until the 13 September race, and it will be interesting to see if the track records will still stand once the circuit is resurfaced.
