They come from France, call themselves Kolle and can convert the standard Renault Kangoo Z.E. into an electric pick-up truck. Since no automaker has ever built an electric pick-up truck and put it on sale, one question comes up: is it really worth it?
Judging by the French automakers’ historic appeal for small cars, a model like the Kangoo would probably not make a splash on the American market. The Kangoo Z.E. could be another story, but how about if that small van was magically turned into a pick-up? Would that make it more interesting?
Of course, it wouldn’t stand a chance against the likes of such giants like Ford F-150 or Dodge Ram but still, it might prove useful zero-emissions alternative for, let’s say, a small business.
According to Kolle, the ones providing the conversion from van to pick-up, there is no change to the drivetrain or batteries. Which means that the reborn utility vehicle is powered by the same 59 HP (44 kW) electric motor delivering 226 Nm (167 lb-ft), drawing its strength from a 22 kWh lithium-ion battery back, just like the standard model.
In addition, the electric range is still rated at around 170 km (106 miles) which if you ask us, should be enough for allowing the owner to carry out a lot of daily tasks while showing some kindness towards the environment and his or hers wallet as well.
This conversion come with a price tag of 14,500 euros ($16,277) but since Renault has so far avoided the United States market, those who might be interesting in such a green pick-up will have to either move to Europe or wait for this niche to expand.
