There's a Bridge in Massachusetts That Turns Trucks into Cabriolets for Free

Being a trucker is no easy life: you have to worry about getting on time, sticking to the schedule, taking care of the goods and minding the other little ants driving around you.
If you happen to pass through Westwood, Massachusetts, you have to add a certain bridge to that list. To be more specific, it's the East Street Railroad Bridge, a construction that's made a pretty sinister fame for itself in the past years.

According to CityLab, this bridge has claimed the scalps of over a dozen trucks since the 1980s, a statistic which begs a question: why the hell are people counting the accidents, instead of doing something about it?

Obviously, raising the bridge would be rather difficult. Also, lowering the street underneath it is probably out of the question. But still, they could make sure it's better signaled since "low clearance" is a bit too obscure. CityLab tells us it's 10'6''. Uhm... I don't know, maybe write that on a sign somewhere? A big one, not like that small plate on the post on the right.

You will still get the occasional truck driver ignoring the signs or thinking "how tall is my rig?" until he finds out it's more than 10'6'' the hard way, but I'm sure the overall number of accidents will eventually drop.

The fact there's a camera so conveniently placed there is also a little dubious. I mean, videos like these are sure to get a lot of YouTube hits, so this could be an evil scheme played out be the local administration to round-off the budget.

We're obviously joking. What's funny (in a way...) is that the Massachusetts bridge has an even more productive relative. There's a similar railroad bridge in Durham, North Carolina that even though is a bit higher, has taken the top off nearly 100 trucks.

According to the Police, most of the incidents occur when amateur moving companies rent trucks and drive them as they would their regular van, oblivious to the added height.

The latest incident in Westwood, Massachusetts happened no further than three days ago (on Monday, the 24th), and for the one before that you only need to go two months back, in June. Or you can have a look at the clip below since it was caught on camera. You have to admire the driver's awareness, though: he keeps on going as if nothing happened, so the Police might be right after all.
