Earlier this month Volkswagen Group counted how many vehicles it sold and said their 10.14 million units are more than what Toyota sold last year, crowning themselves as top automaker for 2014. Well, they spoke too soon because they didn’t took all of Toyota’s subsidiaries into account.
Thanks to Daihatsu minicar subsidiary and Hino trucks, Toyota Motor Corp. managed to surpass VW Group’s sales with a total of 10.23 million vehicles in 2014, also marking the first year to exceed the magical 10 million milestone.

Toyota stands solid now after being thrown off pace in 2011 due to the Japan earthquake and tsunami, a slow down that made GM top seller again after its 80 years of domination.

First time Toyota ruled the automotive market happened in 2008 and lasted until 2010. Still, the natural disasters didn’t set it that far back, since 2012 was also the year of Toyota, overpassing GM with 9.75 million cars sold.

In 2013, Toyota kept first position, beating VW and GM with 9.98 million cars sold worldwide, but 2015 could be the year it steps on second place. Volkswagen could hop into first place as the Japanese company expects a 1 percent sales slump now due to a slowing demand in its homeland and other emerging markets.

The Japanese government raised the national consumption tax recently cutting demand for expensive items like vehicles, making Toyota predict a 7 percent sales fall to 1.45 million there.

However, Toyota and Lexus is doing a great job revamping their lineups, and the other markets are expected to register some sales increases, so we can’t quite say it’s a lost battle yet. There’s still a full year ahead and it sure looks promising.
